New Speed Camera Initiative To Prevent Worker Deaths
Alyce WittensteinConstruction work is well established as the most dangerous of all professions, with deaths and catastrophic injuries exceeding those sustained by police officers, firefighters and roofers combined. In 2022, more than two hundred workers lost their lives in the most hazardous duty of all, construction work on New York’s busy metropolitan highways. Personal injury attorneys in Forest Hills see first-hand how their clients sustain the most serious injuries during construction work and NYC construction accident lawyers can help these injured workers collect the compensation they deserve. The good news is that Governor Hochul has spearheaded the launch of the Automated Work Zone Speed Monitoring Program intended to greatly reduce highway worker casualties in New York.
How Does This Initiative Work?
This program, launched just one month ago in April 2023, consists of dual cameras mounted on vehicles placed at active work zones that monitor the speed of vehicles on the road. In addition to the placement of the cameras, there will be ample signage to reflect that the reduced speed limit near active work zones is being strictly enforced with the use of cameras and the very high fines that will be levied for violations. Personal injury attorneys in Forest Hills are aware that programs like this can greatly reduce the number of accidents that occur on roadways, but it will take some time to acquire statistics about the success of this particular initiative.
